De San Diego Padres investeren in hun toekomst door jonge ster Fernando Tatis jr. voor maar liefst veertien jaar vast te leggen! Tatis jr. is één van de meest talentvolle spelers in de Major League en de Padres hebben genoeg van zijn kwaliteiten gezien om een substantiële investering in de korte stop te doen. In veertien jaar tijd gaat Tatis jr. een bedrag van $ 340 miljoen verdienen.  Dit is een ongebruikelijke beslissing, want de Padres hadden nog enkele jaren relatief goedkoop gebruik kunnen maken van de diensten van Tatis jr.  Echter, met dit contract verklaren de Padres hun liefde aan Tatis jr. en laten zij zien dat de korte stop in de aankomende veertien jaar ‘het‘ gezicht wordt van de ploeg uit San Diego.

Een jonge superster

Fernando Tatis jr. heeft met het tekenen van dit contract zijn financiële toekomst verzekerd. Het contract heeft een looptijd van veertien jaar en in deze periode gaat hij $ 340 miljoen verdienen. Een ongelooflijk bedrag voor een 22-jarige speler met slechts 143 wedstrijden en 629 slagbeurten achter zijn naam. De waarde wordt bepaald door het verlangen van de Padres om hun talentvolle korte stop lang aan de club te binden en de prestaties van Tatis jr. in de 143 wedstrijden die hij heeft gespeeld.

Wanneer wij kijken naar de statistieken dan behoort Tatis jr. tot de beste jonge spelers aller tijden. Gekeken naar OPS over de eerste 600 slagbeurten voor spelers jonger dan 22 in de Major League staat Tatis jr. op de tweede plaats alleen achter toekomstig ‘Hall of famer‘ Albert Pujols. Hij staat in deze rangschikking boven (voormalig) topspelers als Alex Rodriquez en Mike Trout.

Gekeken naar het feit dat contracten steeds lucratiever worden dan kun je beargumenteren dat Tatis jr. over enkele jaren een nog lucratiever contract zou kunnen tekenen, maar een carrière gaat nooit lineair en in sport zijn een hoop variabelen van toepassing. Tatis jr. kiest ervoor om op zijn 22ste een contract te tekenen, waardoor hij de rest van zijn leven zich nooit meer zorgen hoeft te maken over zijn financiën.  Het risico op blessures of mindere prestaties is te groot om een dergelijk contract te laten schieten.

De gok van de Padres

Met het vastleggen van Tatis jr. doen de Padres een ongebruikelijke stap. Het arbitrage systeem in de Major league had ervoor kunnen zorgen dat Tatis jr. nog minimaal 4 jaar in het tricot van San Diego was te bewonderen, waarvan de eerste 2 jaar zelfs voor een relatief laag bedrag. General Manager A.J. Preller wil er echter geen twijfel over laten bestaan dat de toekomst van Tatis jr. in San Diego ligt. Hiermee nemen de Padres een weloverwogen gok dat de prestaties van Tatis jr. alleen maar beter worden of in ieder geval op hetzelfde niveau blijven.

Tot op heden zijn de prestaties van Tatis jr. onnavolgbaar en dankzij zijn charisma behoort de korte stop tot één van de meest herkenbare en aansprekende persoonlijkheden van de Major League. Ook zijn de projectiesystemen lovend over Tatis jr. en wordt er al gesproken over een mogelijk traject richting de ‘Hall of fame‘. Echter, het risico van de deal kan niet onbesproken blijven. Het merendeel van de spelers die al op jonge leeftijd erg goed zijn blijven ook goed gedurende een goede portie van hun carrière. Dit betekend niet dat het ook anders kan lopen. Mindere prestaties door blessures of een mindere interesse kunnen zomaar roet in het eten gooien. Veertien jaar is een lange periode. Wanneer Tatis jr. minder gaat presteren dan kan het contract ook zomaar een blok aan het been worden voor de Padres. Blijven de prestaties van Tatis jr. op zijn huidige niveau of wordt hij zelfs beter dan kan het contract ook zomaar een relatief goedkope deal lijken voor de Padres. Uiteindelijk valt of staat alles met de prestaties van Tatis jr. op het veld.

Dat de Padres niet vies zijn van het investeren van geld in hun huidige selectie blijkt wanneer wij kijken naar de contractwaarde van de binnenvelders. Samen met teamgenoten Manny Machado ($300 miljoen), Eric Hosmer ($ 144 miljoen) en de nieuw aangetrokken Ha-Seong Kim ($ 28 miljoen) vormt Tatis jr. vanaf dit seizoen het binnenveld van $ 812 miljoen.  Samen met de vele ruildeals maakt dit dat de Padres worden gezien als één van de belangrijkste kandidaten voor de World Series titel van 2021. Of dit gaat lukken gaan wij in de aankomende maanden zien!
