Seizoen vooruitblik: American League East

Boston Red Sox (24-36) Met een 24-36 record waren de Boston Red Sox ver verwijderd van de play-offs. Waar de club in 2018 nog de World Series won daar vonden zij zich in 2020 terug op de laatste plek in de divisie, met maar liefst 16 overwinningen achterstand op de divisie winnende Tampa Bay Rays. In plaats van sportieve prestaties lag de focus in Boston met name op veranderingen in de organisatie zelf. Rick Porcello tekent op 13 december 2019 een éénjarig contract bij de New York Mets ter waarde van 10 miljoen dollar. Porcello krijgt hiermee één jaar om zich te bewijzen en een nieuw langdurig contract te verdienen. De Mets krijgen een pitcher waarvan ze weten dat hij niet blessuregevoelig is, die veel inningen voor zijn rekening kan nemen, maar waarvan het niveau van die inningen uiterst onzeker is. Porcello’s carrière laat zich het best omschrijven als een jojo-carrière. Geweldige hoogtepunten laten zich opvolgen door dieptepunten.  Het raarste feit aan zijn carrière? De laatste weken komt een geruchtenstroom opgang waarin wordt gesuggereerd dat 2019 het laatste van Mookie Betts in Boston kan zijn. De MVP van 2018 staat op de nominatie om in 2020 een free-agent te worden en hij heeft eerder een aanbod van de Red Sox om zijn contract te verlengen afgewezen. Gaan de Sox’s een Babe Ruth-achtig scenario beleven en hun sterspeler verliezen aan één van hun concurrenten? Het lijkt onwaarschijnlijk dat, mocht hij de keuze hebben, Betts bij een franchise tekent die niet een grote afzetmarkt (en daarmee budget) heeft.
