De meest ongelooflijke minuut van het Amerikaanse honkbalseizoen in 2020 speelde zich af op 23 oktober. Met 2 uit in de negende inning van de 4^e wedstrijd van de World Series slaat de relatief onbekende Brett Phillips een honkslag. Wat volgt is even ongelooflijk als onbeschrijflijk. Wij nemen je graag mee in het verhaal over hoe een hardwerkende, maar moeizaam presterende honkballer de grootste slag uit zijn leven slaat.

De lange weg naar succes

Brett Phillips heeft een lange weg afgelegd van een jonge jongen die droomt over spelen in de World Series tot aan zijn cruciale hit in de vierde wedstrijd van de 2020 World Series. Gedurende zijn schooljaren op Seminole High school toont de jonge Brett aan over talent te beschikken en dankzij zijn goede spel verschijnt hij, voorafgaand aan de draft van 2012, op de radar van meerdere Major league teams.

De Houston Astros draften Brett Phillips in de zesde ronde als 189^e speler in de draft. Alhoewel scouts twijfelen over zijn vaardigheden met de knuppel zijn zij wel heel enthousiast over zijn atletische vermogen en defensieve kwaliteiten. Zijn atletische vermogen blijkt ook uit het feit dat Phillips een studiebeurs kon krijgen om bij NC state American Football te spelen.  Ondanks de bestaande twijfels over zijn slagwerk zien de scouts in Phillips een toekomstige Major League speler. De verwachting is dat hij met goede begeleiding toch een gemiddelde slagman kan worden.

Gelijk bij binnenkomst in het Astros minor league systeem begint de dan 18-jarige Phillips met slaan en hij houdt hier niet meer mee op. Hij overtreft alle verwachtingen door tussen 2012 en 2015  nimmer een wRC+ onder de 100 bij elkaar te slaan. Hij promoveert elk jaar tot hij in 2015 het AA-niveau bereikt.

In datzelfde jaar 2015 strijden de Astros voor het eerst sinds jaren weer om de play-off plekken. Dit doet General manager Jeff Luhnow besluiten om zijn selectie te versterken. In een ware blockbuster ruil stuurt hij Josh Hader, Dominigo Santana, Adrian Houser en Brett Phillips naar de Milwaukee Brewers voor Carlos Gomez en Mike Fiers. Deze ruil staat hoog op de lijst van slechtste deals ooit in de geschiedenis van de Astros.  Zowel Hader, Santana als Phillips stonden op dat moment in verschillende lijsten in de top 10 van grootste Astros talenten.

De verandering van omgeving beïnvloedde de ontwikkeling van Phillips allerminst.  Net als in het minor league systeem van de Astros bleef de buitenvelder ook bij de Brewers goede resultaten neerzetten. Zijn goede prestaties leveren hem in 2017 promotie op naar de Major league. En hoe! In zijn eerste 37 wedstrijden in de Majors slaat Phillips een solide 105 WRC+.

Helaas kon Phillips zijn goede jaargang 2017 geen vervolg geven in 2018. In de eerste helft van 2018 speelde Brett op zowel het Major league niveau als op het AAA-niveau. Zijn slaggemiddelde daalt en hij noteert in de Majors slechts een 49 WRC+ . Op het AAA-niveau gaat het iets beter en komt hij tot een 93 WRC+. De rijzende ster van Phillips krijgt door zijn mindere prestaties een lichte knauw. Hij verdwijnt enigszins uit de schijnwerpers.

Ondanks de mindere prestaties in 2018 word Phillips op dat moment nog wel gezien als een legitiem talent. Dit blijkt ook op het moment dat de Brewers, die op hen beurt in 2018 jacht maken op de play-offs, opzoek gaan naar versterkingen voor hun selectie. General manager David Stearn wil halverwege 2018 zijn ploeg graag versterken met derdehonkman Mike Moustakas van de Kansas City Royals. De Royals zien potentie in Phillips en na enig overleg is een deal gemaakt. Mike Moustakas vertrekt naar de Brewers in ruil voor Brett Phillips en pitcher Jorge Lopez.

De fans van de Royals uitten hun tevredenheid met de komst van Phillips. Ondanks dat hij in 2018 geen goede resultaten heeft neergezet hebben de fans vertrouwen in de potentie van de buitenvelder.

Phillips krijgt in Kansas City wederom kansen om zijn talent te laten zien op het Major league niveau. Helaas blijven de resultaten tegenvallen. De eens veelbelovende speler wordt vaker dan hij lief is met drie slag terug naar de bank gestuurd. Het lijkt erop dat de pitchers, na zijn goede debuutjaar, de gaten in zijn slagprofiel hebben gevonden. Net als in Milwaukee pendelt Phillips tussen het AAA-niveau en de Major league. Hij slaagt er niet in definitief door te breken.

Halverwege 2020 ziet het er niet florissant uit voor Phillips. In 34 slagbeurten komt hij niet verder dan een slashline van .226/.294/.387 met een 83 wRC+. Zijn verdedigende kwaliteiten zijn uitstekend, maar aan slag levert hij te weinig, om een vaste plek te rechtvaardigen.

De Tampa Bay Rays stevenen halverwege het seizoen 2020 vol af op de play-offs. De General Manager van de Rays, Erik Neander, wil met het oog op de play-offs de breedte van zijn selectie graag versterken. De Rays werken met een krap budget en dat maakt dat zij creatief zijn in het vinden van oplossingen. Voor de ruil deadline maken zij een op het oog onbeduidende transactie. Een transactie die weinig berichtenverkeer genereert. Neander stuurt de talentvolle, maar nog niet voor de Major league geschikte, korte stop Lucius Fox naar de Kansas City Royals in ruil voor buitenvelder Brett Phillips. Phillips gaat dienen als reserve buitenvelder die met zijn snelheid en zijn verdedigende kwaliteiten een rol kan gaan spelen in de beslissende fasen van de wedstrijden. Phillips wordt puur gehaald vanwege zijn defensieve kwaliteiten, zijn mindere slagwerk nemen de Rays op de koop toe.

Honkbal magie

Aanvankelijk wil het ook bij de Rays, mede ingegeven door zijn reserve rol, niet echt vlotten voor Phillips. Hij maakt minder contact dan in zijn periode in Kansas, maar daarentegen raakt hij de bal wel krachtiger. Dit resulteert in een slashline van .150/.320/.400.

De Rays spelen het hele jaar voortreffelijk en halen overtuigend de play-offs. Ondanks enkele spannende momenten slagen de Rays erin om de World Series te bereiken. Als tegenstander wachten de Los Angeles Dodgers. Het behalen van de World Series is, gezien het lage budget waarmee de Rays werken, een unieke prestatie ! Brett Phillips speelt in deze hele campagne een marginale rol. Hij komt in 7 wedstrijden in actie, maar komt slechts 3 keer aan slag. Hij wordt met name gebruikt als een verdedigende vervanging in de laatste inning.

De 4^e wedstrijd van de World Series is een wedstrijd die de Rays absoluut moeten winnen om uitzicht te blijven houden op de titel. In de serie staan zij op dat moment achter met 2-1. De wedstrijd verloopt zoals je hoopt dat een World Series wedstrijd verloopt. Biede clubs scoren runs en het blijft spannend tot de laatste inning.

In de negende inning staan de Rays achter met 7-6. Met twee uit in de negende inning weet Kevin Kiermaier, ondanks dat zijn knuppel breekt bij het slaan van de bal, het eerste honk te bereiken. Met Kiermaier op honk 1 komt de man in vorm Randy Arozarena aan slag. De man die de Rays op zijn schouder heeft genomen tijdens de play-offs krijgt de kans om zijn club naar de overwinning te slaan. Dodgers closer Kenley Janssen slingert zijn worpen met volle kracht en finesse richting de plaat. De slagbeurt gaat naar volle bak, 3-2. Uiteindelijk verdient Arozarena een vrije loop. Met het 1^ste en tweede honk bezet kiest manager Kevin Cash ervoor om Brett Phillips naar de plaat te sturen als pinchhitter.  Waar Arozarena de man is die je juist in zo’n positie aan slag wil hebben, daar is Phillips dat eerlijk gezegd niet.. Wat volgt is pure honkbal magie.

Met deze ene hit is Brett Phillips in één klap een Rays legende geworden. Tot in lengte van jaren zal men Brett Phillips linken aan deze avond en deze slagbeurt!

Deze ene hit belichaamt alles wat honkbal mooi en uniek maakt. Het verhaal van Brett Phillips is er een van belofte, van tegenslag, hard door blijven werken om beter te worden en uiteindelijk van een groot uniek hoogtepunt op een oktoberavond in Texas waar miljoenen kinderen van dromen. Met de rug tegen de muur en als laatste slagman de winnende hit slaan in een World Series wedstrijd. En wat voor een hit!

Uiteindelijk winnen de Rays de World Series niet, maar dat doet er eigenlijk niet toe. Wat overblijft is de herinnering. De herinnering aan de emotie van het moment en het plezier van één van de meest absurde en onverwachte minuten honkbal die je ooit zult zien.
