Startende pitcher Trevor Bauer, de meest begeerde transfervrije speler, heeft zijn keuze gemaakt. Vanaf heden zal hij gaan spelen in het grijsblauwe shirt van de Los Angeles Dodgers. De zoektocht van Bauer, misschien wel de meest polariserende speler in de Major League van dit moment, naar een nieuwe club is breed uitgemeten op zijn eigen social media kanalen. Lange tijd leek de New York Mets de favoriet voor zijn handtekening, maar uiteindelijk viel de keuze op de Dodgers. De belangrijkste motivatie? De kans om een World series te winnen.

De onberekenbare Bauer

Uiteindelijk ging de keuze tussen de New York Mets en de Los Angeles Dodgers. De New York Mets boden meer geld, maar het vooruitzicht om bij de Dodgers gelijk een gooi te doen om de World Series en om in Californië te spelen gaven uiteindelijk de doorslag. Het contract van Bauer is voor 3 jaar en $ 102 miljoen met opt-out clausules na het eerste en tweede jaar. Dit betekent dat Bauer na elk jaar zelf de keuze heeft om zijn contract op te zeggen. Bauer gaf eerder al aan dat hij kortlopende contracten prefereert boven een meerjarige contract voor de rest van zijn loopbaan.

Het feit dat Bauer opzoek was naar een kortlopend contract is juist de reden dat de Dodgers geïnteresseerd waren in zijn diensten. Met dit drie jarige contract hebben de Dodgers een zeer begeerde pitcher binnenboord kunnen halen met een kortlopend contract, zodat zij relatief weinig risico lopen. De meeste transfervrije spelers tekenen meerjarige contracten (7 tot 10 jaar). Dit heeft als nadeel voor de club dat dit contract niet alleen de beste jaren van de speler betreft, maar ook de jaren waarin normaliter de prestaties in een neergaande spiraal terecht komen.

Trevor Bauer is onberekenbaar in alles wat hij doet. Hij vormt in alles zijn eigen mening en hij laat zich niet leidden door publieke druk of bestaande conventies. Dit maakt hem geliefd bij veel mensen, maar ook gehaat. Hij heeft veel volgers op social media, maar hij is ook al even vaak het middelpunt geweest van een internet rel. Bauer kan, met zijn vele volgers, erg ver gaan in het (terug) beledigen of bekritiseren van mensen die kritiek op hem hebben. Zo eigengereid als hij is in zijn internet gebruik, zo uitgesproken is hij ook in zijn sportieve carrière.

Al in zijn jonge jaren kiest Bauer zijn eigen weg en hij heeft de weg mede vrijgemaakt voor nieuwe trainingsmethoden. In zijn studentenperiode op UCLA stond Bauer erom bekend veel met verzwaarde ballen te gooien, veel (verzwaarde en normale) ballen zover mogelijk te werpen en een erg uitgebreide en onconventionele warming-up technieken te gebruiken. Bauer is het uithangbord van de ‘moderne self-made‘ pitcher die laat zien dat je ook met minder intrinsiek talent toch jezelf kunt ontwikkelen tot een top pitcher. De ontwikkeling van Bauer staat ook centraal in het boek ‘The MVP Machine‘.

Zowel het polariserende karakter van Bauer als zijn visie op trainingsmethodiek speelden een belangrijke rol in de keuze voor een nieuwe club. Bauer gaf eerder aan dat zijn nieuwe club ervoor open moeten staan dat hij zijn social media activiteiten wil uitbreidden, om zijn naamsbekendheid nog verder te vergroten. Daarnaast moest de club vooroplopend op het gebied van trainingsinnovatie. Het is onduidelijk of clubs hebben afgezien van een bod op Bauer op basis van zijn standpunten, maar dit is niet geheel ondenkbaar. Organisaties als de New York Yankees hebben ethiek hoog in het vaandel staan. De Dodgers staan bekend om hun vooruitstrevende trainingsstaf en blijkbaar zien zij eventuele controverse rondom zijn persoon niet als een obstakel om Bauer aan te trekken.

De formidabele rotatie

De Dodgers gaan opnieuw voor het hoogst haalbare. De doelstelling is om terug te keren naar de World Series en deze in achtereenvolgende jaren te winnen. Met het aantrekken van Bauer verstevigen de Dodgers hun al ijzersterke rotatie. De rotatie van de Dodgers bestaat nu uit ace Walker Beuhler, levende legende Clayton Kershaw, Bauer zal plek drie innemen, de overige twee plekken kunnen worden ingevuld door de solide Jose Urias, de van een blessure terugkerende David Price, toptalent Dustin May of de sterk presterende Tony Gonsolin.

Op papier hebben de Dodgers een ijzersterke rotatie, maar toch zijn er een paar vraagtekens. David Price komt terug van een blessure en het is afwachten in welke vorm hij terugkeert.  Kershaw is een  ‘Hall of fame’ speler, maar zijn prestaties worden wel elk jaar iets minder. Daarbij zijn er ook nog enkele vraagtekens omtrent de nieuw aangetrokken Bauer. Ondanks zijn Cy Young overwinning in het afgelopen jaar wijzen criticasters op het feit dat Bauer slechts anderhalf jaar echt goed heeft gepresteerd. Bauer is in de afgelopen 9 seizoen in actie gekomen in de Majors. Slechts in 3 daarvan lag zijn FIP onder de 4.00. In het seizoen 2018 en 2020 was Bauer weergaloos, met een 2.44 FIP in 2018 en een 2.88 FIP in 2020. Door zijn wisselende prestaties wordt zijn FIP voor 2021 door het STEAMER projectiesysteem neergezet op 4.10. Een dergelijke FIP zal in Los Angeles als teleurstellende worden ervaren.

Bauer zal, of hij zijn topniveau haalt of juist niet, een belangrijke rol spelen in de tweestrijd met de San Diego Padres om de NL East divisie.  Het beloofd een spannende strijd te worden tussen twee ploegen die beide volledig voor de titel gaan.
